The ghosts kept their promises and I didn’t see them again for the rest of the day. Lucas and I had a lazy afternoon and then got dressed up to attend a swanky cocktail party being hosted by one of Mark’s friends. He’d left us tickets and the invitation on the counter. The host was another big-time industry guy. According to Lucas, Mark hadn’t taken the hint that he wasn’t interested in getting back into show business, but we’d decided to attend the party anyhow. It was held at a beautiful home about half a mile away and gave us an excuse to get gussied up. Plus, it came with access to free top-shelf booze and a myriad of catered goodies. Since the walk would be short even in evening wear, we decided to leave the SUV at home.

I wore a lavender one-sleeved dress made from some kind of frothy material that moved beautifully and made me feel like Grecian royalty. I styled my hair in accordance, doing my best to tuck away all the stray tendrils under two beaded gold headbands. The look on Lucas’s face when I descended the stairs made the hour in the bathroom and the curling iron burn on my middle finger all worthwhile.

The party was more fun than I’d expected, although I spent a lot of it smiling and nodding as Lucas introduced me to people he’d met along the way during his time in reality TV security. Several of them told him to give them a call if he ever wanted work. He graciously declined the offers, but there was a part of me that started to wonder if he missed his old life. He’d been able to travel quite a bit with his new job, but it wasn’t as boots on the ground as he might have liked. There was a lot of corporate red tape to navigate, and each job came with a mountain of paperwork and long meetings spent clashing with others over differing opinions on how best to carry out the job. When he’d owned his own security company, he’d called the shots and was able to keep his business light and flexible, able to change on the fly, depending on the circumstances encountered. Now, he was bogged down in busy work and spent more time in board rooms than he would have liked.

We enjoyed the food and drinks and the company for a few hours, excusing ourselves a little after ten o’clock. On our way back to the house, we decided to walk on the sand instead of the street. We kicked out of our shoes and clasped hands as we started the trek. The tide was out, so we stuck to the shoreline.

“That was fun,” I said, somewhat awkwardly.

Lucas nodded. “There were a lot more familiar faces than I’d expected. Everyone says it’s a small world, show business, and that pretty well proved it.”

“Apparently, you’re a hot commodity. How many business cards did you get tonight? It had to be at least six!”

“I wasn’t really counting,” he replied.
